FSM Participates in China International Import Expo (CIIE) 2018

sBEIJING —The long-anticipated China International Import Expo (CIIE) finally opened its doors on November 5, 2018 in Shanghai city, where 172 countries and over 3,600 companies gathered to take part in this first ever annual event which lasted six days.  “New Era, Shared Future” was this year’s theme for the Expo.  Regional and international organizations held discussions, pursued common developments, and workedthe grounds on the sidelines of the event which attracted many world leaders to speak, including prominent business magnates andphilanthropists such as Bill Gates and Jack Ma.

During the opening ceremony on November 5, 2018, H.E. President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech where he urged an open international trade through the concept of the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as a commitment to a win-win and fair global exchange.  President Xi announced that this CIIE will be an annual event going forward.  

In line with the efforts of the FSM Department of Resources and Development to promote the FSM as a tourism and investment destination, the FSM Embassy in Beijing was tasked to represent the FSM at this first annual CIIE in Shanghai.  For the past several months, the FSM Embassy in Beijing had been working hand in hand with the FSM Department of Resources and Development, the four state Visitors’ Bureaus and the four state investment offices, as well as other Pacific Island countries, and relevant Chinese government ministries in Beijing, to facilitate its preparation for the first annual CIIE.  Through such effort, the FSM Embassy utilized this opportunity as a platform mainly to promote the FSM to the large international audience that were in attendance. 

Through the Expo, the Embassy was able to show case products with exportable potential from all four states to over 200,000 visitors per day.  The products included the Green Banana Fiber and Wawa Banana Chips from Kosrae; Pohnpei Pepper, Updated Coffee, Noni Juice, and Coconut Oil Bath Soap from Pohnpei; A’s Pure Water from Yap and numerous handicrafts from all four states.  The Embassy intends to work closely with the four state private sectors especially the respective chambers of commerce to promote more products in next year’s CIIE.

The FSM delegation to the Expo was comprised of Ambassador Carlson D. Apis, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission K.S. Vincent Sivas, and First Secretary Francis G. Anefal.  The Embassy expresses its appreciation to the FSM Department of Resources and Development for its guidance and valuable assistance which made the FSM’s participation a success.
